Electricity is nice

In Zambia, we pray for rain. This is a country heavily dependent on hydro power for electricity. The past year was fairly dry so the dams are not producing the level energy that the countries growing population and economy demand. The result is something we call ‘load shedding’. It basically means we don’t have power for 8 hours a day. It is scheduled so everyone knows when it is but still an inconvenience. Batteries are your friend. Keeping them charged is a priority.

We gather under the gricidia tree and talk by moonlight because, what else is there to do when its dark. The whole place is a bit spooky. But then the lights come back on and everyone is happy again.

Take me to church

Kabwe Chapel

Today we went to church.  I usually make it out on Sundays but it seems like a couple of weeks and I was craving the experience.  Two weeks ago I boarded a plane and came to Zambia and missed the chance. Last week we went to a village church but it was hard to understand.  Today, the full church experience.  It wasn’t the two songs and move on, we sung for a full hour and I loved every minute of it.  It was kind of a special service so they combined the two services into one longer one

.  This was probably the first time I have seen the whistle  (think referee) used in worship.  Anything that makes noise could fit somehow into this Zambian orchestra.
